For more than 40 years, Mayumi Oda has made it a practice when she can’t paint to copy out the heart sutra. In this print, she used an overlay technique to place a sea turtle (or honu) over the sutra, blending her practice with the love of her home in Hawaii. We used Mayumi's original artwork in creating this textile design, so if you look carefully enough you can even see the ink drops from her paintbrush in some places.

The Artist:  Mayumi Oda

Mayumi Oda is one of Hawaii’s most treasured and well-known artists. Mayumi's lifelong concern for the earth and her view of it as a source of healing and nourishment moved her to begin cultivating a farm on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Born in Japan, for the past 20 years Mayumi has lived and worked in her home at Gingerhill Farm in Kealakekua. Growing up in Tokyo, Mayumi studied fine art and traditional Japanese fabric dying. Mayumi’s unique apprenticeship dying fabric for kimonos influences the color and composition of her work.

I originally bought this dress because of the print, but have fallen in love with the fit and feel of this dress. Quality materials and structure will make this a go to dress for me for many years. I'm already planning layering options so I can continue wearing it into the colder winter months. Received lots of compliments from co-workers and friends when I wear. I ordered a large and I'm 5'7 and 155lbs. Great fit across shoulders and drapes well. Hits slightly above knees. Roomy but not baggy looking. Highly recommend this dress and would consider buying another one or other items from Western Aloha. Proudly representing them in Tennessee!

Great dress for any occasion

Being a huge fan of their men’s shirts, I have been waiting for more styles for women from western Aloha. They nailed it with this shirt dress, I love everything about it. The material is silky smooth soft, but doesn’t wrinkle too easily and drapes on the body very nicely. I love how the top fits around my shoulder and chest. The fit is very flattering, even to a body 3 months postpartum. I didn’t think it was possible but I was even able to breastfeed while wearing the dress, so I don’t have to wait months before I start wearing it out! I’m a fan of the artists series and love the heart sutra print by Mayumi Oda. The blue is a gorgeous deep color and so easy to wear out.

I am 5’1, got size xs. The dress falls just above my knees.
